Passport Processing & Photo Services
The Study Abroad Office at the University of North Texas is an official Passport Acceptance Facility for the U.S. Department of State. We offer passport service for students, faculty, staff, and the general public. No appointment needed! Note: The passport application process will take from 15 - 20 minutes, depending on each applicant situation. For customers applying with minors, families applying together, and cases concerning citizenship, the process may take longer.

If staff are available, we provide photo services during the opening hours of the Study Abroad Office (8:00 am - 5:00 pm, Monday - Friday). 


Applying for a Passport - Documents Needed

  • Unsigned DS-11 form completed in black ink (blank forms available onsite)
  • Proof of U.S. Citizenship - Original birth certificate*, expired U.S. passport (not accepted for minors under the age of 16), certificate of naturalization
  • State Issued ID (such as a driver's license or identification card)
  • One passport photo
*Abstract versions of Texas birth certificates must have a capital letter “I” after the date filed in order to be accepted as proof of citizenship by the U.S. Department of State. Abstracts from California are never accepted.

Passport and Photo Fees
Two separate forms of payment are required to apply for a passport.

    • Passport photos: $12.00 (Applicants may bring their own passport photo, if desired)
  2. Check or Money Order to pay for: (Payable to U.S. Department of State)
    • Passport book
Please note that amount depends on how soon you want your passport back. One check or money order can be used for families or couples applying together.

Applicants 16 years of age or older:

Applicants traveling in less than two weeks are requested to visit the U.S. Department of State website to learn about how to get a passport in a hurry.

Please note that passport cards cannot be used for air travel to any international destination. The passport card is only to be used to enter the United States when returning from Canada, Mexico, Bermuda, or the Caribbean, at land border crossings or sea-ports of entry.

Passport Renewal
Applicants who obtained a U.S. Passport when they were under 16 years of age need to apply in person and complete a DS-11 form as a new applicant. Applicants who obtained a U.S. Passport when they were over 16 years of age and whose passport expired less than 15 years ago need to apply by mail. For full details, please visit the U.S. Department of State website. Applicants who plan to renew their passport by mail are welcome to visit our office to pick up the necessary forms or take a passport photo.


Frequently Asked Questions

Can I apply at your location even if I am not a UNT student, faculty, or staff?
Yes. We are open to the public. Anyone is welcome to visit our office to apply for a passport, including children and families.

Do I need to make an appointment to apply for a passport at your location?
No. We offer walk-in hours only. Please visit the UNT Passport Acceptance Facility website for the hours of service.

I have a photocopy of my birth certificate. Can I use it for my application?
No. The U.S. Department of State requires the submission of an original birth certificate to apply for a U.S. Passport. All documents submitted in original will be returned to the applicant with the passport.

I need to submit an application for my underage child. What are the requirements?
For minors under 16 years of age, both parents must be present at the time of the application, as well as the minor. If one parent cannot be present at the time of the application, a DS-3053 form must be signed by a notary and submitted with the DS-11 application. I need to replace a lost/stolen passport. Can you help me with this?
Yes. Applicants can report their lost or stolen passport online or in person at the Study Abroad Office. If you need to apply for a new passport, you would also need to complete the DS-11.

I need to correct or update my name in my passport. What do I do?
You need to complete the DS-5504 form available in the Study Abroad Office. For detailed information, please click here.

Is my passport going to be delivered to the Passport Acceptance Facility at the Study Abroad Office?
No. All U.S. Passports will be mailed directly to the applicant.

I applied for a passport and it has not been delivered within the estimated timeframe I was given. What should I do?
Contact the National Passport Information Center at 1-877-487-2778 or by email at NPIC@state.gov for all questions regarding the status of your application.
