What is an Exchange Program?
Exchange programs are an affordable way for UNT students to study abroad. Students to attend a designated partner university and are taught by their professors, but pay UNT tuition and fees to UNT just as if they were taking the classes at UNT.
Exchange students are fully enrolled at the partner university for a semester or two so UNT students take classes alongside local students and typically live in university accommodations. This program type allows for a greater cultural immersion and aids in language acquisition for those taking classes in another language. There is an exchange coordinator at UNT and one at the partner university to assist students. Click here for a more in-depth overview of exchanges.
To be eligible to apply to and participate in this exchange program with UMAG, students must:
- Be a major at UNT;
- Have completed at least one semester at UNT prior to going abroad;
- Have at least one semester remaining at UNT after the program;
- Have a minimum 2.75 cumulative GPA at UNT at time of application;
- Be in good conduct standing at UNT at time of application until departure for program.
This is the deadline to apply to the UNT Study Abroad Office to be selected and nominated as an exchange student.

- Complete UNT Exchange Application for this program on the UNT Study Abroad Website and submit requested documentation.
- Schedule a meeting with a Sub-Antarctic Biocultural Conservation Program faculty advisor by writing to firstname.lastname@example.org.
- There are a limited number of spaces available per semester per exchange program so students will be notified of acceptance into the program. After application has been reviewed by the UNT Study Abroad Office, the application will be approved or denied. Notifications will be sent via email to the UNT email address on file for the student.
- Should a student be selected, the student will receive instructions from the UNT Exchange Coordinator (StudyAbroad.Exchanges@unt.edu) on the next steps to take to apply to partner institution and information related to pre-departure preparations.
The Partner University
The University of Magallanes (UMAG) was created in 1981 as a successor to the Punta Arenas branch of the former State Technical University, which began in 1961. As a public institution with a solid tradition in the Chilean university system, at present the University of Magallanes has over four thousand students enrolled in its five distinguished faculties: Engineering, Sciences, Education and Social Sciences, Economic and Juridical Sciences, and the School of Medicine. And which offers 32 undergraduate degrees and 15 technical degrees.
Since 2004 the University of Magallanes has been accredited by the National Commission of Undergraduate Accreditation (CNAP).
Through teaching, research and outreach activities, our institution aims to develop knowledge and human resources in the southernmost region of Chile and South America. Furthermore, UMAG offers two programs related to the Antarctic and Cultural Heritage of the Magallanes and Antarctic Region: Antarctic Minor and Patagonian Minor.
This particular exchange is specifically for undergraduate or graduate UNT students who are affiliated with the Sub-Antarctic Biocultural Conservation Program to take courses in "Management and Conservation of Natural Resources in Sub-Antarctic Environments” at the UMAG campus in Punta Arenas , or related field courses offered at satellite locations in Puerto Williams, Puerto Natales or other partnering field sites.
The Location and History
UMAG’s main campus is located in Punta Arenas, the capital city of Chile’s southernmost region Magallanes and Chilean Antarctic.
The UMAG is located in the Magellan and Chilean Antarctic Region and centers its work in one of the largest pristine regions of Chilean Patagonia. Its main campus and Institute of Patagonia are located in Punta Arenas. Additionally, research, education and outreach activities are carried out in the University centers at Puerto Natales, Porvenir (Tierra del Fuego), Coyhaique and Puerto Williams Research Center together with the Omora Ethnobotanical Park.
Punta Arenas is the capital city of Chile's southernmost region, Magallanes and Chilean Antarctica. Located on the Brunswick Peninsula north of the Strait of Magellan, Punta Arenas was originally established by the Chilean government in 1848 as a tiny penal colony to assert sovereignty over the Strait. During the remainder of the 1800s, Punta Arenas grew in size and importance due to the increasing maritime traffic and trade traveling to the west coasts of South and North America. This period of growth also resulted from the waves of European immigrants, mainly from Croatia and Russia attracted to the gold rush and sheep farming boom in the 1880s and early 1900s. The largest sheep company, controlling 10,000 square kilometers in Chile and Argentina, was based in Punta Arenas, and its owners lived there.
Since its founding Chile has used Punta Arenas as a base to defend its sovereignty claims in the southernmost part of South America. This led, among other things, to the Strait of Magellan being recognized as Chilean territory in the Boundary treaty of 1881 between Chile and Argentina. The geopolitical importance of Punta Arenas has remained high in the 20th and 21st centuries because of its logistic importance in accessing the Antarctic Peninsula.
Punta Arenas is among the largest cities in the entire Patagonian Region. In 2012, it had a population of approximately 127,500, and it is roughly 1,418.4 km (881 miles) from the coast of Antarctica.
The Magallanes region is considered part of Chilean Patagonia. Magallanes is Spanish for Magellan, and was named for Ferdinand Magellan, the Portuguese explorer sailing for Spain. While circumnavigating the earth for Spain, he passed close to the present site of Punta Arenas in 1520. Early English navigational documents referred to this site as "Sandy Point".
The city proper is located on the northeastern shore of Brunswick Peninsula. Except for the eastern shore, containing the settlements of Guairabo, Rio Amarillo and Punta San Juan, the peninsula is largely uninhabited. The municipality of Punta Arenas includes all of Brunswick Peninsula, as well as all islands west of the Isla Grande de Tierra del Fuego and north of Cockburn and Magdalena channels.

UNT students can choose to study for one semester (Fall or Spring) or two semesters (Academic Year), or UNT wintermester at UMAG. Semesters are typically:
- Academic Year: March to mid-December
- UNT Fall Semester: August to mid-December
- UNT Wintermester: mid-December to mid-January
- UNT Spring Semester: March to Mid-July
Academic Pre-Approval of Study Abroad Credits
Students often ask how do they know what courses taken abroad will count as back at UNT. During the study abroad application phase at UNT, students will have access to the "Academic Pre-Approval Form for Study Abroad."
- Students should schedule a meeting with SBCP Faculty Advisor by writing to chile @unt.edu
- Students should identify a minimum of four (4) classes per semester they intend to be abroad.
- Print out the course syllabi for the selected courses.
- Populate the Academic Pre-Approval Form with the course number and title (e.g. AMSE201 PHYSICAL CHEMISTRY I) and the number of credit the host institution indicates the course is worth (e.g. 3 credits).
- Contact respective department’s advisor regarding instructions on obtaining pre-approval of course work.
- Obtain Major Academic Advisor to sign off on the degree plan hours.
- Obtain College Dean's Signature.
- Sign form.
- Return original form to UNT Study Abroad Office.
UNT students participating on an UNT exchange are required to maintain full-student status both at UNT and while abroad for the duration of the exchange. This means that UNT students will be enrolled in 12 hours of credit in the UNT 3000 EXCH for undergraduate students, or 9 hours of credit in the UNT 5000 EXCH course for graduate students. The UNT Study Abroad Office will enroll students in the EXCH course. While abroad, UNT students will also be enrolled for a minimum of 12 hours of UNT equivalent credit as determined by the students' completed academic for pre-approval for study abroad credit form. This is typically results in UNT students taking a minimum of four classes at University of Magallanes.
Students should contact a SBCP Faculty member for information about courses and availability on a semester by semester basis.
At UMAG, each student’s academic performance is graded according to the following criteria: exams and assignment results, attendance, and class participation. Students usually take regular examinations twice per semester (mid-term and final). They may also be given additional assignments by their professors. A minimum 70% of attendance is required in order for a student to earn a passing grade. Student’s performance is normally graded on a 100 point scale. Below is the UMAG grading scale in comparison to UNT.

Grades from the exchange term will be transferred back to UNT and applied to students' ongoing GPA as transfer credit, meaning the grades do not factor into the students' ongoing GPA, but are calculated into the cumulative UNT GPA at graduation. However, grades from exchange programs cannot be posted to a student's UNT academic record until the host institution has sent the official transcript to the UNT Study Abroad Office (University of North Texas / 1167 Union Circle #310210 / Sage Hall 236 / Denton, TX USA 76201).
UMAG will send one official copy of the UMAG transcript to UNT and one official copy to the student's UNT e-mail. UMAG sends transcripts for Fall students to UNT usually in January and for Spring usually in July. However, UMAG will not release transcripts if the student has an outstanding financial obligations with UMAG. Students may contact UMAG directly for additional transcripts.
Once the UMAG transcript has been received, the UNT Study Abroad Office will send the transcript evaluation to the UNT Registrar's Office and send a notification to the student when this has occurred and request that the student retrieve the UMAG transcript from the UNT Study Abroad Office. The transfer hours should be posted by the UNT Registrar’s Office to the students' academic record within 7-10 business days. Once the student is able to log into their MyUNT portal and view the transferred hours, the student should:
- Schedule a meeting with his/her major advisor,
- Download a copy of his/her academic pre-approval for study abroad credit form for the program from the UNT Study Abroad Portal, and
- Bring the pre-approval form and UMAG transcript to the major advisor to have the credits properly applied in order to have their degree program completion requirements updated.
UMAG does not have on-campus housing. Most exchange students typically will rent a room in a private home, or an apartment.
After students have been selected to be nominated for exchange studies at UMAG, they will receive instructions on how to apply for admissions to UMAG. Due to the nature of exchanges, the UMAG admissions is more of a formality in order to issue UMAG student and Chilean immigration documents. Students are selected for exchange studies by UNT in consultation with the partner university. After students have been admitted to UMAG, UMAG will send the student instructions on how to find lodging accommodations.

Please note that aid awarded by UNT typically is not released by the Student Scholarships and Financial Aid Office until approximately 10 days before your program is scheduled to start and/or the first day of the program depending on the type of aid. If your program starts before classes commence in Denton, your aid will not be disbursed until as late as the first official Denton class day. For example, program starts January 1 and classes start in Denton on January 15, you may have to wait until January 15th to receive your aid. Please plan accordingly.
