International Studies Major
SRAS: Russian as a Second Language: St. Petersburg
I chose my study abroad program not only to grow my knowledge of the Russian language, but to expand my knowledge and understanding of the country's culture. Russia is not a very popular place for foreigners to want to travel or a popular language to be studied, which makes people miss out on its beauty and rich traditions. I felt that studying abroad in the Russian Federation would not only feed my sense of adventure, but it also would also make me more culturally aware and appreciative of Slavic traditions.
My experiences in Russia as an African American studying in relatively homogeneous country (being that most people in Russia are Slavic) can help me contribute by being able to share my experiences with other students who find themselves in similar situations and worry that it may be challenging, like I did at first.
