Proof of Citizenship

Documents Accepted as Proof of U.S. Citizenship:

  • Original or certified copy of your birth certificate

    • Must be issued by the city, county, or state

    • Hospital certificates are not accepted

    • Photocopies are not accepted

  • Certificate of Naturalization

  • Certificate of Citizenship

  • Undamaged U.S. Passport book or card 

Birth certificates must include the full name, date of birth, and place of birth of the applicant as well as both parents' full names. The issuing authority’s seal and signature must also be visible.

Certified copies of Texas birth certificates can be obtained through any county clerk’s office in the state.

Passport Application Documents will be returned.

Have an abstract?

Abstract versions of Texas birth certificates must have a capital letter “I” after the date filed in order to be accepted as proof of citizenship by the U.S. Department of State. Abstracts from California are not accepted.
